Department of Biology

About the Department

Our department is one of the oldest scientific departments at the University of Tikrit. It was established in 1992, and over the years, it has witnessed continuous expansion in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In the current academic year alone, the department hosts 937 undergraduate students and 44 preparatory year students, in addition to a comparable or greater number of postgraduate students engaged in research at the master's and doctoral levels across various biological specializations.

The department has also experienced significant growth in its academic staff, both in terms of number and scientific rank. As of now, the department includes:

  • 5 Professors

  • 9 Associate Professors

  • 17 Lecturers

  • 9 Assistant Lecturers

In terms of scientific activities, the department has successfully organized more than six scientific conferences, including two major international conferences attended by researchers from Iraqi and Arab universities. Additionally, the department has conducted dozens of scientific seminars and workshops in specialized biological fields, attracting participants and researchers from various disciplines.

In line with the University Presidency’s strong commitment to achieving a distinguished position in global university rankings, our academic staff has focused on maintaining high scientific standards and publishing research in reputable journals indexed in Scopus and Clarivate databases. During the current academic year alone, the department has published 22 research papers in these high-impact journals, with hopes of increasing this number to include publications derived from graduate theses and dissertations, reflecting the advanced academic level of our postgraduate studies.

Furthermore, the department has contributed significantly to the academic landscape in Iraq by providing a number of graduates holding Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in various specializations to several universities, including: Anbar, Kirkuk, Diyala, Samarra, Mosul, Kermian, Sulaymaniyah, Salahaddin, as well as nearby private universities in our province.

In conclusion, all members of the department remain committed to accomplishing the planned scientific activities that enhance academic integrity in teaching, research, and graduate output. We ask Allah Almighty for continued success in serving our beloved university and country.

Department Vision

Department Vision

To enhance performance across the various fields of Life Sciences—such as Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, and Ecology—while keeping pace with the ongoing advancements in higher education. This is to be achieved by providing the best possible services and facilities to academic staff, and by offering continuous training and development opportunities to technical and administrative personnel.

The department seeks to graduate job creators, not job seekers, by equipping students—before graduation and during their foundational education—with essential skills in research, development, innovation, initiative, and entrepreneurship. Students are encouraged to actively participate in all activities that enhance their skills and stimulate creativity and innovation, moving beyond passive learning to transforming knowledge into value through research, development, and innovation.

The department positions itself as a scientifically advanced center in its field, aiming to produce highly qualified scientific cadres capable of creativity and innovation. It aspires to serve as a tool for achieving scientific integration and as a means to improve societal living standards, striving to attain international recognition in education and contribute meaningfully to the progress of the nation.
