Department of Mathematics – Overview

With humble beginnings and great ambition, the Department of Mathematics at the College of Education was established during the academic year 1996–1997 by three professors and one assistant lecturer. United by a shared passion for the elegance of numbers, they took the department’s first modest step toward leaving a lasting mark on the mathematical landscape of the college.

The early days were not without challenges. As student numbers grew, the department laid the foundation for a strong mathematical structure under the leadership of Professor Younis Jihad Yaseen, the department's first head. Year by year, the department expanded its academic staff, forming a balanced blend of youthful energy and deep scholarly expertise. Through changing faces and the enduring strength of mathematics, the department preserved its academic structure and commitment to excellence.

The Department of Mathematics aims to graduate highly qualified professionals by offering modern, high-quality academic programs that contribute to societal advancement in various fields. It plays a crucial role in supporting the teaching of mathematics, in addition to providing consultation and research services in mathematics and statistics to various institutions. The department also contributes to scientific progress through active research and participation in both national and international conferences.

Striving for excellence in education, the department offers programs in fundamental sciences that enable students to acquire both basic and advanced knowledge and develop the skills needed to compete in the labor market. In the same year of its establishment, the department admitted its first cohort into the morning study program, following an annual academic system similar to other departments in the college. Later, in 2009, the department launched the evening study program.

The department grants a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics upon completion of an integrated program consisting of 64 credit hours of mathematics courses and 32 credit hours of general and educational subjects. The first cohort of bachelor's students graduated in the academic year 1999–2000.

Postgraduate studies began with the Master’s program in 2001–2002, producing a generation capable of addressing the complexities of the modern world. The Ph.D. program was launched in 2002–2003 but was temporarily suspended for one year due to a shortage of qualified faculty members.
